San Francisco Giants sign Alex Wood

The San Francisco Giants made a significant change on Thursday, signing initial left-handed pitcher Alex Wood for a year.

The wood will receive US $ 3 million guaranteed, with another US $ 3 million in incentives.

Just yesterday I wrote an article examining the Giants’ options for a southpaw and used Wood’s photo. I put wood on a layer that I titled The “wow, wait, are you really making moves? Cool! “Options. And I started that level by stating: “The Giants will almost certainly not hire these players, so get on with your life. But it sure would be nice if they did. “

And this is cool!

Wood has struggled for the past two seasons, having dealt with a shoulder injury in 2020 and a back injury in 2019. These injuries led to an ERA of 5.96, an FIP of 6.02 and 45 eliminations for 15 walks in only 48.1 entries.

But before that, Wood – who turned 30 a few days ago – was a very good pitcher. From 2016 to 2018, he had an ERA of 3.29, an FIP of 3.38 and 352 eliminations for 98 walks in 364.1 entries. In his six seasons prior to 2019, he was worth 13.4 fWAR in just over 800 entries.

Giants baseball operations president Farhan Zaidi certainly knows Wood, as they have both been members of the Los Angeles Dodgers for many years. It will be a little strange to see Wood in a Giants uniform, as he has spent about half his career wearing the blue Dodger, but I think Giants fans will adjust well.

This is certainly not a move that will put the Giants in contention in a division that features the Dodgers and the San Diego Padres, but it certainly looks like the Giants are a better team today than they were yesterday.
