San Francisco 49ers move up in NFL draft, acquire third choice for Miami Dolphins, sources say

The Miami Dolphins revoked the NFL draft for 2021, sending choice # 3 to the San Francisco 49ers for the 12th choice, which they traded with the Philadelphia Eagles, sources told ESPN.

As a result, the Dolphins ended Friday’s play with overall choice # 6 in this year’s draft and several future first round choices as part of their choice, sources told ESPN.

The Dolphins first sent shockwaves across the landscape, swapping choice # 3 for 49ers in exchange for choice # 12 this year, a choice of first and third rounds in 2022 and a choice of first rounds in 2023, ESPN sources Adam Schefter said .

Miami then continued to negotiate shortly thereafter, sending choice No. 12, No. 123 and a 2022 first round choice to the Eagles in exchange for choices No. 6 and No. 156 this year, it was announced.

These successful moves confirm the Dolphins’ insistence in this off-season that they are building around quarterback Tua Tagovailoa in 2021, while increasing their flexibility and ability to add elite talent through draft in future years.

The move puts 49ers directly into the mix to scale a top defender, but sources told ESPN that San Francisco is holding Jimmy Garoppolo and has no plans to change him.

“Jimmy is here to stay,” a 49ers source told Schefter. “He’s our guy this year.”

The 49ers chose to trade because they are good with the options that will be there in third place after the choices of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New York Jets, sources told ESPN.

Choice number 3 was acquired by Miami in the deal that sent Laremy Tunsil to the Houston Texans. As a result of this agreement, the Dolphins got Noah Igbinoghene, Solomon Kindley, choices No. 12, No. 36 and No. 102 in 2021, as well as the selections from the first round in 2022 and 2023.

The choice of the third round of the 49ers for the Dolphins in 2022 is a compensatory choice for the hiring of Robert Saleh by the Jets.
