San Diego Padres to acquire Pittsburgh Pirates’ right-hander Joe Musgrove, sources say

The San Diego Padres are in agreement to acquire the right-handed Joe Musgrove from the Pittsburgh Pirates, sources said to ESPN’s Jeff Passan.

The switch to Musgrove is awaiting medical analysis, according to the sources, and will send a large package of potential customers back to the Pirates. Hudson Head, a well-respected field player, must be in the group that goes to Pittsburgh.

Musgrove, 28, was 1-5 with an ERA of 3.86 in eight games for Pirates in the 2020 season shortened to the coronavirus pandemic.

Musgrove, the opening day holder of the team in 2020, is expected to make $ 4.45 million in 2021 after he and the Pirates signed a contract last Friday to avoid arbitration.

He is 29-38 years old with an ERA of 4.33 over 108 games in five major league seasons, including 83 games.

Musgrove is the third starting pitcher acquired by the Fathers in this off-season. San Diego acquired southpaw Blake Snell and right-handed Yu Darvish in separate box office hits last month with the Tampa Bay Rays and Chicago Cubs, respectively.

This is the second significant exchange completed by the rebuilding Pirates, who exchanged first baseman Josh Bell with the Washington Nationals last month.
