San Diego County Reports First Child Death Related to COVID-19

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County reported 39 additional deaths from COVID-19 on Friday, including the county’s first pediatric death.

The county public health officer confirmed that the child was a 10-year-old boy with underlying medical conditions, but declined to disclose specific details because of privacy laws.

“Our deepest condolences go out to this child’s family and friends,” said Wilma J. Wooten, MD, MPH, county public health officer. “The death of this boy is a bleak reminder that this pandemic affects everyone in our community, regardless of age, and we must do everything we can to protect each other and slow the spread of the virus.

Wooten continues to urge san dieganos to do the following:

  • Wash your hands
  • Beware of distance near others
  • Wear a mask
  • When sick, stay home and get tested
  • Get vaccinated when it’s your turn

The “vaccination superstation” at Petco Park administered its 100,000th dose of the COVID-19 vaccine on Thursday.

San Diego County has the capacity to administer more than 20,000 vaccines per day and expects to increase to 30,000 next week, but it currently only has supplies to administer around 10,000 vaccines per day.
