San Diego County opens vaccine appointments for daycare and farm workers on Saturday

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) – San Diego County will open vaccines for new groups starting on Saturday.

According to the municipality, education and childcare workers, emergency service workers and those working in agriculture and food will be eligible for the vaccine starting this weekend.

The announcement moves the county to Phase 1B of the vaccination effort.

“We will be opening vaccines for about half a million San Diegans,” said Supervisor Nathan Fletcher on Wednesday. “There will be no half a million consultations available on Saturday, Sunday, Monday or the next few weeks,” warned Fletcher.

The county decided to open vaccine appointments after seniors failed to use the first dose appointment, said Fletcher.

Fletcher said vaccinations will be split between agencies to help administer vaccines among newly announced groups:

  • Vaccination for K-12 educators will be administered by the San Diego County Office of Education. All others eligible in this group will go to the county’s vaccination website to schedule an appointment.
  • Vaccination for emergency workers will also be carried out on the county’s website. Scripps Health will provide help to vaccinate the authorities.
  • Vaccination for food and agriculture categories will be carried out on the municipality’s website. CAL FIRE will be helping to vaccinate rural workers on the spot.

Fletcher added that more than 783,000 vaccines have been administered in San Diego County so far. Of this total, almost 68% of the elderly were vaccinated. About 7.3% of San Diegans were fully vaccinated.

“We are getting vaccines in arms at a very impressive rate,” said Fletcher.

San Diego County began receiving a portion of the nearly 80,000 doses of vaccine delayed by the storm on Tuesday night, allowing the county to reschedule all second missed doses and resume first dose consultations.
