Texas’ offensive attack, Samuel Cosmi, may be attracting attention before the NFL Draft. However, it was not always like this.
Leaving Atascocita High School, the Texas native was small and underestimated. Recruited three stars by 247 Sports, Cosmi was classified as the 135th offensive tackle in the country. In a state famous for its high school football, he was ranked only as the 195th best player in Texas. Looking back on your high school career, however, it is difficult to understand why.

As a junior in 2015, Cosmi is credited with 56 pancake blocks and 31 knockdown blocks. He allowed only two bags in 476 passing attempts. When Atascocita reached 6A Division I in the quarterfinals, Cosmi was part of an offensive line that helped the attack to average 44 points per game.
Atascocita was even better in 2016, reaching the semifinals of 6th Division I. As a senior, Cosmi allowed zero sacks in 445 attempts, as well as 66 pancake blocks recorded with 40 knockdowns. As a result, he was recognized with honors from the All-State 6A Second Team.
Only four programs offered Cosmi a university football scholarship. After originally committing to Houston, he changed his commitment to follow Coach Tom Herman to the University of Texas.
Samuel Cosmi entering the 2021 NFL Draft is not the same small-sized offensive tackle that arrived in Texas. Coming out of Atascocita, he weighed just 260 pounds within a 6’7 ″ frame. In order to face the rigors of college football, he redshirted in 2017. During that year away from the field Cosmi added more than 40 pounds.
After a year on the sideline, Cosmi made his debut against Maryland in 2018. After an impressive performance, he would start the rest of the season in the right attack for the Longhorns. In the space of two years, he went from under-dimensioned and under-recruited to winning Freshman All-American awards.
In the second year in 2019, Cosmi moved from right to left, showing valuable versatility. He started all 13 games, earning second team All-Big 12 honors as a defender Sam Ehlinger played for the second most yards in Texas history. Cosmi made history on the show alone, fighting for a touchdown against West Virginia.
After the 2019 season, Texas offensive attack Samuel Cosmi courted the NFL Draft. However, he insists that the plan has always been to return to the junior season. After allowing only a quarterback hit, a loss tackle and a sack in eight games, Cosmi declared for the NFL’s 2021 draft. He ended his career in Texas by earning honors from First Team Big 12.
Analyzing Samuel Cosmi’s NFL Draft Profile
Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi is one of the most experienced and versatile attackers in the 2021 NFL Draft. He started 34 career games for the Longhorns. Most of his starts were in the tackle on the left, but 13 of them were in the tackle on the right.
Although he plans to play the left tackle in the NFL, there is no reason why he cannot start the right tackle immediately for a team before leaving to protect the blind side after he perfected his NFL craft.

This manifests itself in two ways. First, he shows excellent athletics when reaching the second level in the racing game. Second, his athleticism is shown in protecting the pass as he can recover quickly from mistakes to ensure he is not defeated.
At 6’7, ”Cosmi has a large size for the offensive attack position. However, it is not only its height, but also its length, that makes it an attractive proposition. The smaller defensive ends will have a hard time hitting him, as he uses his long arms to keep them easily apart.
Finally, Cosmi shows incredible football intelligence on the field. He demonstrates a good understanding of angles, putting himself in a position to win either in passing protection or blocking in the racing game.
What are the possible concerns with Samuel Cosmi?
Despite his versatility and experience, there will be some concerns about Samuel Cosmi before the NFL Draft. He often relies on his athleticism, rather than technical refinement to win. This is something that will be more difficult to do in the NFL. He needs to work on hand placement and time, as he often seems too slow to get his hands on his man.
The downside to being a 6’7 ″ offensive tackle is that you play naturally with a high pad level. Although Cosmi’s previous wrestling experience means that he has a good understanding of leverage, he needs to be aware that he should not leave his chest exposed.
Despite showing some cool reps where he will crush your man on the ground, there are reps where you would like to see him being a little more aggressive to finish the job. However, this is a minor concern for an impressive prospect.
Samuel Cosmi’s best tweaks in the 2021 NFL Draft
This next class is loaded with offensive tackle talent. Behind Oregon Penei Sewell, is a choice of your poison preference among several potential customers. Texas offensive tackle Samuel Cosmi is set to be included among the candidates for an NFL Draft selection in the first round, as there are several teams with needs in the position.
I see teams like Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers who choose at the end of the first round as potential destinations. However, I would not be surprised to see Jacksonville Jaguars address the position with the second of their first round choices.
Despite receiving buzz in the first round, on his last big board for the Pro Football Network Tony Pauline gives Samuel Cosmi a second round note in this NFL Draft class. He is Pauline’s 64th potential player and 10th ranked offensive tackle.
