  • Samsung has confirmed that its next flagship Exynos chipset will have an AMD GPU.
  • The company announced the news at its Exynos 2100 launch event.
  • This points to an AMD GPU within the main line of the Galaxy S of 2022.

Samsung and AMD announced a partnership to develop a mobile GPU in 2019, with the goal of offering better performance compared to the current Arm Mali GPU and closing the gap for Qualcomm.

The Korean company has just announced the Exynos 2100 processor, set to power the Galaxy S21 phone series in some markets. But the new processor still uses Arm’s Mali graphics instead of AMD’s power. However, Samsung LSI President and General Manager, Dr. Inyup Kang, revealed during the launch event that his “next flagship product” would have an AMD “next generation mobile GPU” (jump to 12:48).

Samsung Semiconductor has already clarified for Android Authority which referred to its next Exynos processor, instead of the next main phone.

“By ‘next major product’, Dr. Kang was referring to Exynos,” said a company spokesman, adding that it was not possible to clarify specific devices that will use the next processor.

However, confirmation that Samsung’s next Exynos processor would use an AMD GPU means that we can expect it to arrive in 2022. In other words, it looks like the Galaxy S22 series could offer AMD graphics next year.

It is too early to say whether an Exynos processor with AMD graphics will result in class-leading GPU performance, but the initial effort will definitely set the foundation for future efforts.
