Samsung’s latest budget phones ask: is the refresh rate more important than the resolution?

If you had to choose: would you choose a clearer screen on your smartphone or a smoother scrolling screen? This year, buyers of cheap phones may be wondering: the OnePlus Nord N100, the Moto G50 and the new Samsung Galaxy F12 and M12 update their screens 90 times per second (which is good!), But with a value less than optimal 720p screen resolution. This is the same resolution as a 2011 Galaxy Nexus.

Compared to the average of the iPhone, it is an insignificant number of pixels. Since the iPhone 4 was launched in 2010, all Apple devices offer at least 326 pixels per inch (PPI), enough that you can’t see those individual pixels with the naked eye at normal viewing distances. (The marketing term is “retina display”.) Here, the PPI would be more like 270.

And yet, Apple has never offered an iPhone with a high refresh rate screen, which we often find to be one of the most desirable features on high and mid-range smartphones, since it does everything you do ( not just games) look much smoother. (Apple can make it happen later this year.)

But the Galaxy F12 and M12, OnePlus and Moto show that the high update doesn’t have to be a next-generation feature, or even a $ 300 one as we saw recently with the OnePlus Nord N10 5G. Samsung phones, in particular, cost less than $ 150 each, as long as you’re willing to sacrifice pixels to get there.

In other ways, the 9,999 rupee devices also look like decent choices: they are based on the same basic platform as the Galaxy A12 and its set of four cameras, but with a larger battery of 6,000 mAh that surpasses many others. the market. You get a side-mounted fingerprint sensor. Note that while your 8 nm Exynos 850 processor may look new and shiny, it is not comparable to Qualcomm’s recent Snapdragon 800 series chips. It’s closer to the 2019 Snapdragon 665 in performance.

It is not clear whether any of these phones will reach the United States yet. The OnePlus Nord N100 has already done so, and the G50 launched in Europe at the end of last month.
