Samsung Display is a mass-produced 90 Hz OLED screen for laptops

Samsung Display has announced plans for mass production of the world’s first 90 Hz OLED screens designed for laptops and says that “several global IT companies” are due to launch models with the new panels this year. Manufacturing will begin in March in “very large quantities,” the company said in a statement attributed to CEO Choi Joo-sun.

The panels are 14 inches in size, although the Samsung monitor did not give details about specifications such as aspect ratio or resolution; several versions may be available. Samsung cites the faster response time of its OLED panels, claiming “virtually” the same amount of blur as a 120 Hz LCD when displaying fast-moving content. No potential OEM laptop partners were named in the statement.

OLED screens are not unheard of in laptops, but they are not at all common. Although some gaming laptops offer them as an option, the downside is that you had to give up on high refresh rates. And although Samsung itself launched an OLED-equipped Chromebook Galaxy last year, the subsequent 2021 uses a cheaper QLED brand LCD display.

Samsung is the world’s largest supplier of OLED screens, so today’s announcement suggests that OLED laptops are likely to become much more common this year.
