When the Jets negotiated quarterback Sam Darnold with the Panthers on Monday, they continued a long-standing tendency to negotiate their first-round picks in the draft.

In fact, Darnold, whom the Jets recruited in 2018, was the sixth consecutive pick of the first round they negotiated.

In 2017, the Jets chose safety Jamal Adams in sixth place overall. Last year, they negotiated it with the Seahawks.

In 2016, the Jets chose linebacker Darron Lee in 20th overall. In 2019, they negotiated it with the Chiefs.

In 2015, the Jets chose striker Leonard Williams in sixth overall. In 2019, they negotiated it with the Giants.

In 2014, the Jets chose safety Calvin Pryor in 18th place overall. In 2017, they negotiated it with the Browns.

In 2013, the Jets chose the defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson in 13th overall. In 2017, they negotiated it with the Seahawks.

The last choice of the first round that the Jets did not exchange was cornerback Dee Milliner, which they selected in ninth place overall in 2013. They eliminated him in 2016.

The fact that the Jets were able to negotiate those six choices from the first round shows that they were not complete arrests, since a complete apprehension has no negotiating value. But it is certainly not ideal for Jets that the choices in the first round do not last long enough to sign a second contract.
