The eponymous biopic of Lifetime Salt-N-Pepa opens on Saturday. The film focuses on the rise of Cheryl “Salt” James and Sandra “Pepa” Denton from Queensborough Community College to world-famous hip-hop. DJ Spinderella, a former DJ of the group, did not like being left out of the process.
As TMZ reports, Spinderella, born Deidra Roper, posted a topic in the tweet today condemning the Salt-n-pepa movie. “Sorry, but I need to talk about this Lifetime special …”, she wrote. “Often, black women who have made significant contributions to their industry are left out of historical narratives. At the time when Salt n ‘Pepa was building our legacy, which is rooted in the empowerment of women, I could not have dreamed that this same group would one day weaken me. Words cannot fully express my disappointment when I heard that the decision was made to move on with a Lifetime biopic that mistakenly excluded me from all aspects of development and production … all the time using my image, given that I played an integral role in the history and success group. “
Spinderella continued: “There is nothing more unacceptable than a woman being silenced by another woman. That is why, I will not support you. I do, however, want to congratulate the talented actresses who represented us, including Monique Paul, with whom I wish I had the opportunity to share my true perspective. In reflection, I am grateful to have managed to sustain a 30-year career of truly empowering women with my gift, against all odds. This will continue in my work and in my service. The great news is that I am in the final stages of writing my memoirs, a personal journey navigating through life, relationships and the industry that created me. Over 30 years is a lot of content and I’m ready to share. “
