Skydance Interactive’s The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners made more than $ 29 million in its first year of sales.
The game, which arrived on PC VR on January 23, 2020, was also released on PSVR and Oculus Quest over the past year. Skydance says that this figure represents sales on all platforms. Notably, however, the team pointed out that the game sold 10 times more on Quest than on Rift and Rift S. The Quest version was released just four months ago.
This is easily one of the largest revenue sums we’ve seen for an RV title, albeit over a long period of time. It is difficult to find lifetime revenue statistics for other games – we know that Superhot VR sold over two million units in May 2020 and made over $ 2 million in revenue during the 2019 Christmas period, but we have not seen updated figures since Quest 2 launched in October 2020. Many developers have reported a dramatic increase in sales during that period.
The Walking Dead can undoubtedly attribute much of its success to the quality of its content, delivering a complete multi-hour single-player campaign with deep survival mechanics and an impressive physics system. We gave 4/5 in our review, saying: “Despite its small problems like relatively boring environments, repetitive mission structure and human AI that leaves a little to be desired, The Walking Dead: Saints & Sinners is easily the best zombie game in RV so far. “
Not only that, but the game saw first-class ports for PSVR and Quest, although these systems are less powerful than many gaming PCs. In addition, the game was released along with Quest 2.
Going forward, Skydance is set to deliver the first free content update for the game, The Trial, at Oculus Quest next month after the release of the PC and PSVR last year. Given today’s numbers, however, it looks like we’ll hear more Skydance news in the future.
