The Mariners added another appeaser, but not yet. A baseball source confirms that the Mariners are in agreement on a multi-year contract with reliever Ken Giles. The 30-year-old right-hand was operated on by Tommy John in October and is unlikely to launch in 2021.

Four positions Mariners can still sign for 2021

Giles is coming out of a 2020 season reduced by injuries, where he made just four appearances for the Toronto Blue Jays, allowing for four races.

In 2019, Giles posted an ERA of 1.87 with Toronto, winning 23 bailouts. A powerful pitcher, Giles qualified in the 98th percentile in strikeout and whiff percentages in 2019, as well as in the 94th percentile in speed with a fastball averaging 97.4 mph and could reach 100. He also limited hitters to one batting average of 0.184.

The signing continues a trend of speed in the Mariners ‘bullpen by general manager Jerry Dipoto, who acquired Andrés Muñoz dos Padres in the 2020 negotiation deadline, rehired Kendall Graveman shortly after the end of the season, negotiated by Rangers’ Rafael Montero on December 15, and hired Keynan Middleton on December 16. The group has more in common than speed, as all four relievers have also undergone Tommy John’s surgery.

The return of Tommy John’s surgery is usually in the range of 14-16 months, and the results in recent years have been very good. While there is some controversy as to the notion that pitchers can really pick up speed after surgery – Dr. Lewis Yocum, who worked alongside Dr. Frank Jobe, who was the pioneer of surgery, believed that pitchers usually pitch with a deficit before surgery, thus giving the illusion of speed gain – many return to form.

Dipoto did not shy away from the pitchers who left the surgery with Marco Gonzales and Taijuan Walker returning with the Mariners’ uniforms.

With the change, the 2022 bullpen may have a better view with the possibility of several elite speed relievers at the rear end.

The deal with Giles is pending a physical exam, which is due to be completed early next week.
