Although Georgia playmaker Sahvir Wheeler set Georgia’s record for assisting in a single season, the South Carolina Gamecocks beat the Bulldogs 91-70 on Saturday in Athens.
Georgia moves to 14-10 (7-10 SEC) after the game, which marks the Bulldogs’ tenth consecutive loss to the Gamecocks.
“I did a terrible job of telling these guys the level of fighting and endurance that would be needed in this game,” said coach Tom Crean. “When no one is in the fight, it depends on the head coach.”
Wheeler recorded five assists on Saturday, giving him 170 in the season. This leads him to overtake Pertha Robinson (169, 1994-95 season) to receive the largest number of assists in a single season in the history of UGA.
In addition to Wheeler making history at UGA, it was a day to forget for the second guard from Houston, Texas. Wheeler shot just 2 out of 13, including 0 out of 4 out of three. He finished with 7 points, 7 rebounds and 7 turns.
Georgia led South Carolina for a short time in the middle of the first half. South Carolina quickly ended that with a 13-0. Gamecocks would never look back and led the entire second half.
The Bulldogs return to hardwood next Saturday against Alabama in Athens. Tipoff is set to 14h.
