SAG Awards to be pre-recorded, lasting just an hour after disastrous Globes

As far as pandemic awards are concerned, none has been as disastrous as last week’s Golden Globes. Despite the efforts of co-host Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the 78th annual ceremony was plagued by technical flaws, several errors related to Zoom and the controversy surrounding the lack of diversity among its electoral body.

And while the ratings of most coronavirus-era award programs have steadily declined, only 6.9 million viewers watched this year’s Globes – making it the least-attended ceremony since the 2008 program, which was held as a collective of press after the fall of the writers’ strike.

Then, in the hope of avoiding a similar fate, the next Screen Actors Guild Awards, postponed to April 4 after several delays, will be fully pre-recorded and will only last an hour.

“We’re trying to have a unique award ceremony in an hour and get people talking, which rarely happens [with an awards show], ‘Dude, I wish we had more,’ ”executive producers Todd Milliner told Variety in an interview published on Wednesday.

This year’s SAG Awards will take place without a host and even a physical set, featuring instead a mix of scripted comedy segments and the striking speeches from the “I’m an Actor” ceremony, all of which will be filmed and edited before the broadcast. .

This year’s SAG nominations chose to honor a series of projects rejected by the Golden Globe.

Setting a new precedent for the upcoming ceremonies, the winner of each of the 13 categories will be revealed days before the show. The nominees will enter several Zoom support rooms, where the winner will be announced and make an acceptance speech.

While disclosure of results prior to transmission leaves SAGs vulnerable to leaks, executive producer Kathy Connell explained that organizers expect the nominees to “respect the show enough and everyone does, and their fellow actors, with whom they don’t they want to disappoint the public at home, letting the surprises go ”.

“It was a combination of, how we do it, how we recognize our colleagues, our members and the great performances they are giving – and still respect the fact that there are a lot of people suffering in this country,” she added.

As for who can attend the ceremony, Lily Collin and Daveed Diggs, who announced the nominees via a live stream on Instagram, will make an appearance, as will Sterling K. Brown, Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.

The nominations for this year’s SAG chose to honor a series of projects despised by the Globes. In addition to Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7”, an entirely new list of films, including “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom”, “Da 5 Bloods”, “Minari” and “One Night in Miami”, will compete for the night maximum award for exceptional performance for an ensemble.

On the television side, “The Crown” and “Schitt’s Creek” dominated the drama and comedy categories, with newcomers such as “I May Destroy You”, “The Flight Attendant”, “The Great”, “Ted Lasso” and “Bridgerton “also nabbing appointments.

The 27th annual SAG Awards will now air on TNT and TBS on Sunday, April 4, at 9 pm.
