Safe mode limits the Dodge Charger and Challenger Output to 2.8 HP

Dodge today announced a new software update for some Challengers and Chargers that will add an extra layer of security designed to prevent reckless travel and theft.

The update, available for free on any 2015 or newer Dodge Challenger or charger equipped with the 392-cubic-inch Hemi V-8 or the 6.2-liter supercharged V-8, adds a new double-check security system that can be customized by the owner.

When active, the driver must enter a four-digit encryption code before gaining access to all features of the car. If the code is not entered, the car will be in a kind of lame mode, where the engine cannot rotate above idle speed. Dodge estimates the engines generate only 2.8 horsepower and 22 lb-ft of torque at idle – just enough to get the car moving, let alone for a quick escape after a theft.

Dodge says it is implementing this new layer of security to protect against thieves who tamper with the key code, who copy keychain signs to gain access to vehicles. Although the four-digit pin is not entirely secure, it is much better than nothing. Having this system in place also means that the joyriders will not be able to perform any mischief at high speed while you are not around. Dodge says the system should also help prevent high-speed chases.

Qualified car owners should contact their local dealer to schedule a meeting to install the free software. It should be available from the second quarter of 2021.
