Borat Subsequent Moviefilm made headlines (even before its launch on Amazon Prime Video) with its most distressing scene: the result of an interview between the former New York mayor and Donald Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani and Borat (Sacha Baron Cohen) daughter Tutar (Maria bakalova) In the film, Baron Cohen’s Borat arrives to prevent the scene from unfolding as one would fear, but the star revealed that he was genuinely “afraid that the scene would become even uglier”.
In a conversation with Ben Affleck for the Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Baron Cohen revealed how he, director Jason Woliner and Borat 2 The production started the prank against Rudy Giuliani, even though he feared it could go wrong easily:
“In this scene, we built a secret compartment inside a wardrobe for me to stand on, and it was about six feet. I am standing in complete darkness. I have to put on this erotic outfit to seduce Giuliani. And the idea was that I could communicate with a cell phone. I turned on the cell phone. I am totally dark and has 4%. It is an hour and a half scene. And actually, I interrupted the scene. There was another version where room service brings a cart, and I am hiding in the cart. I never thought he was really going to enter the room. “
But Baron Cohen explained that Bakalova’s safety was his priority, even with the disadvantage of his low battery phone. He had to turn the phone off and on to conserve the battery, as the interview was scheduled to last an hour and a half. And at one point he called the phone to find text messages from the director of the film saying, “NOW! NOW! NOW! “At that moment, he came out of the closet and ran to the bedroom, finding Giuliani lying on the bed.
“I hoped for the film that they would [go in the room]. But also, you know that as a producer and director, I have an actress there that I need to take care of and protect as well. We are putting you in a situation with a powerful man who may or may not have been in this situation before. And then, finally, I basically ran, but I had no idea he was in bed. “
The fortune seemed to be on Baron Cohen’s side, as Affleck noted that the scene was unfolding as if Borat had arrived just in time “before it turns into something so horrible that we can’t even include it in the film.”
“Yes,” replied Baron Cohen. “We were afraid that the situation would become even more unpleasant.”
