Russia fines Twitter for not removing posts

A Russian court fined Twitter on Friday for not removing posts that encouraged minors to participate in protests, the Associated Press reported.

The court’s decision came after the Russian telecommunications agency pressed the platform to remove the content or be blocked.

The court found Twitter guilty on three counts of violating regulations on restricting illegal content, ordering it to pay three fines totaling 8.9 million rubles, or about $ 117,000, the AP reported.

A Twitter spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Watchdog Roskomnadzor claimed last month that Twitter has not taken down more than 3,000 posts with banned content, including information about drugs, child pornography and increased suicide among minors.

The watchdog also said at the time that it would slow Twitter’s upload speed if it didn’t meet the Kremlin’s requirements to remove the content.

A Twitter spokesman at the time said that the platform’s policies already describe a number of prohibited behaviors, including content that involves child sexual exploitation or promoting suicide or self-harm.
