Russell Wilson’s potential divorce from the Seattle Seahawks appears to have become somewhat more likely, with the Dallas Cowboys reported on their wish list for potential new teams.
After a report by The Athletic that said Wilson had discussed possible commercial destinations with the Seahawks, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Wilson did not request an exchange and would like to stay in Seattle, but would consider only the Cowboys, New Orleans Saints, Las Vegas Raiders and Chicago Bears.
Additionally, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler Wilson reported that he does not expect to be traded at the moment, but that several league executives believe it will eventually be made available by the Seahawks.
If a deal were approved, it would have a seismic impact on the league, but it is just a trade-off for the Cowboys that would significantly change this year’s draft.
In fact, Dallas is the only franchise in that quartet of teams that has a choice among the top 10 in 2021. An exchange with the Saints, Raiders or Bears would not do much to influence the first round of this year, but a deal with the Cowboys could create chaos.
What a potential business with the Cowboys would be like
Seattle would obviously require the tenth overall choice in any business, placing the Seahawks in a position to potentially recruit Wilson’s successor.
Wilson’s arrival in Dallas would obviously make Dak Prescott a surplus. Cowboys could potentially tag and negotiate Prescott or simply let him get in on the action.
In either scenario, names like New York Jets, Miami Dolphins and Carolina Panthers could be involved in the bid. The prospect of another team in the top 10 not having to choose a quarterback can cause the group to call the flags after Trevor Lawrence slides across the board and teams in need of quarterback struggling to negotiate and grab them.
Zach Wilson, Justin Fields and Trey Lance will all be in high demand and the teams in a position to write one of them will almost certainly make commercial offers. But a negotiation with Wilson for Dallas would increase the chances of a deal on draft day for one of the quarterback’s greatest potential players.
Everyone loves the chaos of recruiting day, and if you’re a neutral interested only in watching the drama unfold, you must firmly hope that Wilson ends up in Dallas.
