Rush Limbaugh had an unlikely friendship with Elton John, who performed at his 2010 wedding

After the death of conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh, people are remembering one of their most enigmatic friendships in Hollywood: Elton John.

Although the pair were often on different sides of most political issues, John and Limbaugh had a friendship that solidified in 2010 when the radio announcer called the singer to perform an 80-minute set in Palm Beach, Florida, wedding to Kathryn Rogers .

According to People, who interviewed John’s husband, David Furnish, at the time, the singer was not sure whether the invitation to the nuptials was genuine. However, when it became clear that the Limbaughs really wanted the artist there, despite political differences, John said, “Life is about building bridges, not walls.”

He would have added, “Perhaps, if I make a good impression, people will change their outlook on life.”

Seeing an opportunity, his future wife wrote a letter to the artist asking if he would be willing to perform at his wedding. Limbaugh claimed at the time that there was no reluctance on John’s part to perform.

Furnish said in his interview with People that the couple “was incredibly gracious and very welcoming and very sweet and very grateful”.

In the years that followed, John spoke favorably about the radio announcer, even though he didn’t always agree with him. According to a 2012 USA Today interview, he even speculated that Limbaugh did not personally have some of the beliefs about the gay community that he championed on the air.

Meanwhile, in a 2014 interview with The New York Times, John encouraged his fans that the most important thing anyone can do with someone they disagree with, as he did with Limbaugh, is to open a dialogue.
