Earlier today, DigiTimes shared a preview of an upcoming report alleging that Apple is working on models of iPad and Mac notebooks with OLED screens that can be launched from 2022. The full report from DigiTimes is now available, and includes several new details about Apple’s plans.
According to the report, the first of these devices to adopt an OLED screen is likely to be a 10.9-inch PiPad, probably an updated version of the iPad Air. The updated PiPad is planned to go into production in the fourth quarter of this year, with a launch in early 2022. In addition to the 10.9-inch iPad9, Apple is also considering using OLED screens for the 12.9-inch iPad Pro and the 16-inch MacBook Pro.
The sources pointed out that the first device to come with an OLED panel is likely to be a 10.9-inch iPad, scheduled to begin volume production in the fourth quarter of 2021 for an official launch in 2022.
The American brand is also considering adopting OLED panels for its 12.9-inch PiPad Pro 12 and 16 to 17-inch MacBook Pro scheduled for launch in 2022, but has yet to make a final decision, the sources note.
While rumors of OLED screens for larger Apple laptops have only recently begun to emerge, the company has been making the transition to mini-LED screens on its iPads and Macs for some time. DigiTimes says the two display technologies will exist side by side, “each targeting different groups of customers.
A number of sources, including DigiTimes indicated that a 12.9-inch PiPad Pro with a mini-LED screen will be launched in the first half of this year, and DigiTimes says that the models of MacBook Pro of 14 and 16 inches that will arrive in the second half of the year will also adopt mini-LED.
