Buffalo Bills has been very quiet this week, as the free agent frenzy has occurred around the NFL, but general manager Brandon Beane continues to eavesdrop in search of the right deal.
NFL Insider Benjamin Allbright Reports that Bills and Los Angeles Chargers have made offers to the disgruntled football player Zach Ertz. The snag seems to be that the Eagles want more than the Bills or Chargers are offering.
“The Eagles have been trying to get Buffalo and the Chargers to increase their offerings, so far neither side has given in,” said Allbright.
Earlier this week, Dan Graziano of ESPN said the Bills were trying to add a tight end to the free agency. A day later, Michael Silver of the NFL Network reported that Bills and Tampa Bay Buccaneers had offers for the indebtedness of free agent Rob Gronkowksi. Western New York’s product apparently considered Buffalo’s offer before deciding to sign again with Tampa Bay to play with Tom Brady again.
Eagles general manager Howie Roseman spoke to the media on Thursday and was asked about any progress in the Ertz business. He reaffirmed his position that the team is willing to scale Ertz in 2021 if they can’t find a deal they like.
“To change any player, it has to make sense for both sides,” he said. “None of us had the year we wanted to have last year, but that doesn’t define us. We know who he is on and off the field and we value that. “
The Bills have seven draft choices in the April draft (two choices from the 5th round and zero choices in the 4th round) that they can try and use in any business. Depending on what the Eagles want, Beane may have a round in mind that he is not willing to change to add a 30-year tight end.
Ertz is in the last year of his contract and is expected to turn in $ 8.25 million and arrive with a maximum of $ 12.47 million, according to Spotrac.com contract numbers. Ertz supposedly wants a new deal made and the Bills would have to work it out if they wanted to negotiate for him. If the Bills want to sign an extension with him, they could theoretically add it and make this year’s ceiling a reasonable amount as part of a new multi-year agreement.
The Eagles may struggle to get the kind of value they are looking for in a deal for Ertz because of the low production of their attack last season. Ertz had a low career of 36 receptions for 335 yards and just a touchdown.
Buffalo left tight end veteran Lee Smith on Wednesday for the Atlanta Falcons for a choice in the seventh round in 2022. That leaves Dawson Knox, Tommy Sweeney, Reggie Gilliam and Nate Becker as the only tight end currently on the Bills list.
Since then, the Chargers have signed a one-year contract with free agent Jared Cook.
