Roy Williams is ‘ecstatic’ by NCAAs, expects a ‘big challenge’ from Wisconsin

North Carolina won eighth place in the 2021 NCAA Tournament and will face ninth place in Wisconsin on Friday. The time of the game has not yet been announced as of 9 pm on Sunday night.

If the UNC defeats the Badgers, the Tar Heels will face first place winner Baylor and 16th Hartford on Sunday.

“We are ecstatic to be playing in the NCAA Tournament,” said UNC coach Roy Williams in a statement released on Saturday night. “There were a few times during the season when we were wondering whether or not we were going to take the field, but our team just kept getting better and better. So I am ecstatic for these children, who have suffered so much due to Covid and have the opportunity to continue their season. “

North Carolina is 18-10 (10-6 at ACC) and has won four of their last six games, including two games at the ACC Tournament.

Roy Williams has 29-0 of all time in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, including a 15-0 record at the UNC.

“This will be an unusual tournament to say the least, but particularly for our coaches, because we have a lot of young players who will be playing in the NCAA Tournament for the first time,” added Williams. “Wisconsin will be a big challenge, but we have played our way to our seed and we will have to play very well to move forward. But we are looking forward to having that opportunity.”

UNC is making its 51st appearance at the NCAA Tournament, which is second only to 58 appearances in Kentucky. Tar Heels advanced to the Final Four 20 times and won six NCAA national championships, most recently in 2017.
