Gary Neville, Roy Keane and Gary Lineker said Manchester United should have received a penalty against Chelsea.
United was hopeful of receiving a penalty after the VAR asked referee Stuart Attwell to review an incident involving Callum Hudson-Odoi and Mason Greenwood, where the ball appeared to hit the former’s arm.
However, despite watching a replay on the field monitor, Attwell maintained his initial decision and chose not to aim for the mark.
“There is no doubt that at the beginning of the season this would have been a penalty,” said Neville in a co-comment during the review. “I think he will take a penalty. I think Hudson-Odoi’s panic is the fact that his arm shouldn’t be there, he tries to get his body in, but then he pushes him away.
“There is no doubt two or three months ago, this is a penalty, and there is no doubt that the referee on the field would have followed the referral, but the referees are more daring and the handball laws are being changed before our eyes as the season progresses.
“You talk about an unnatural position, I just think it’s probably a penalty because of the height of the ball, it’s not exactly a hit on it. Tuchel and Solskjaer are having a fight.
“We saw some stupid people this season when it was crushed on a player and you think, ‘How’s that a penalty?’ Hudson-Odoi can see the ball traveling from a distance, it is in the air and in his hand it keeps him away from Greenwood.
“It is interesting because when the instance actually occurred, Chelsea players were asking for a handball from Greenwood.”
Lineker agreed with Neville’s verdict and wrote on Twitter: “I hate the current handball law, but under current guidelines this is a penalty.”
Keane also disagreed with Attwell’s decision, saying that Hudson-Odoi moved his hand towards the ball: “We’ve seen data before for incidents like this.
“When he stopped the game and went to the screen, Chelsea players are concerned, they are around the referee, which probably does not help. He puts his hand in the direction of the ball, there is no escape from it.
“We saw them being given, we don’t want to see players being punished for that, but he raises his hand.”
