Roundup Rumor: Goldberg’s Return, Raw’s Original Plans, Mickie James, More!

Speculating about the rumors surrounding professional wrestling is a favorite pastime of many fans, perhaps second only to watching the games. In this daily column, we take a look at the latest rumors spread across the professional wrestling rumors factory.

Important reminder: rumors are just that – rumors. None of this has been confirmed as a fact, it is only circulating in the professional wrestling rumors factory. We tracked the accuracy of the rumors in a weekly article called Rumor Look Back, which you can find here. Remember, take everything with a grain of salt.

Rumors of the day:

  • Dave Meltzer on Wrestling Observer Radio said the WWE decided that Goldberg would challenge Drew McIntyre for the WWE championship in Royal Rumble last Saturday.
  • Not surprisingly, they also say that the McIntyre vs. Keith Lee fight was very long and McIntyre should do a promo that Goldberg would be responding to, which is why Goldberg’s promo didn’t make a lot of sense.
  • PW Insider says the show was originally planned to open with Hulk Hogan doing a promo in the ring, but they switched to the cold opening they did.

  • They also say that the original plans included Randy Orton vs. Jeff Hardy for the show’s main event, but that was changed later in the day.
  • Inside the Ropes notes that despite reports that Mickie James was quietly moved to the Legends side of the WWE roster, she is still an active artist for the company and has been released to fight.
