The Steelers began preparing for the AFC Wild Card Round game on Sunday against the Cleveland Browns at Heinz Field, losing some players but getting some back.
Security guard Terrell Edmunds (shoulder) was a full participant after losing Sunday’s game against the Browns, while kicker Chris Boswell (groin), who also lost the Browns game, was limited.
Cornerback Steven Nelson (knee) was limited in practice, while nose tackle Tyson Alualu (ankle) and linebacker Vince Williams (quad) did not train.
Guard Matt Feiler and linebacker Robert Spillane returned to training on Wednesday, while both remain on the reserve / injured list.
“We have some guys who are being released to work this week, and that job could create an opportunity for them,” said coach Mike Tomlin. “Robert Spillane is significant. Matt Feiler is another significant. The inclusion or potential inclusion of these guys is exciting, but it also creates some challenges from the point of view of decision making, because we feel we have a few options. Guys who played in the place of some of these guys did a good job for us. It’s a good problem to have as we prepare this week. ”
Feiler was placed on the reserve / injured list on December 14. Before the injury, he started 13 games on the left guard, a position that Kevin Dotson has assumed since the injury.
Spillane was placed on the reserve / injured list on December 12 with a knee injury. He played 12 games this season, starting with seven after Devin Bush suffered a knee injury at the end of the season. Spillane has 43 tackles, 37 of them solo stops, two sacks, four tackles for a loss, three quarterback strikes and an interception, which he returned 33 yards for a week 8 touchdown against the Ravens, and a fumble recovery.
The Steelers have a 21-day window to activate Feiler and Spillane on the 53-man roster.
