Rosamund Pike reveals the meaning of the Vape pen

It turns out that Marla Grayson played fair at one point.

Rosamund Pike leads J Blakesonin I care a lot like Marla Grayson. Superficially, it can be believed that Marla is a court-appointed guardian who seeks to help those in need, but in fact, Marla is busy finding loopholes in the system to better serve herself. With the help of a local doctor, Marla targets elderly individuals and convinces the court to place them in their care. Then, she puts them in a care institution, even if they don’t need to be in one, so she can take control of their assets and reap the benefits. Marla is overflowing with confidence and thinks she is totally in control until she takes aim in the wrong wing – Jennifer Peterson (Dianne Wiest), a woman with ties to a mobster (Peter Dinklage)

Along the way, Marla is busy sucking on a vaporizer pen. As Pike herself said, it is an accessory that gives Marla a powerful and appropriate “dragon quality”. Given the fact that the vaporizer pen is such an active support throughout the film, I had to ask Pike about incorporating it into his performance when we had a chance to chat before the film’s release on Netflix on February 19th. Although it is a very striking component in the film, I didn’t expect vaping to be so important to Marla’s story. Here’s how Pike explained:

“Marla’s story is that she had a vaporization business until Walmart was excluded from the market by a large vaporizer store with huge discounts that opened across the street, and made her furious. I think that was her chance in the American dream played fair. She had a small business, she owned a small business, she screwed herself and then she thought: ‘Okay. The chips fell. I’m giving it my all. I will play the system like everyone else. ‘And I think that every time she inspires, she brings that attitude. It’s the attitude of being screwed and now you want to screw everyone. ”

Pike was quick to point out that such a trajectory would not be the case for everyone who felt screwed by the American corporation:

“Not everyone would react like Marla does. I think she has that kind of self-centered pride that means she doesn’t believe she should be screwed. She deserves better. She won’t be. As she said, ‘I will not lose. I don’t lose. ‘”

If you haven’t seen I care a lot yet, be sure to check Matt GoldbergCriticism of the film at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival, which will likely increase the urgency to take a look at Netflix. But, if you’ve seen it, I can confirm that the film is highly rewritable and the awareness of this vape backstory adds a curious layer to Marla’s motivation and journey.
