Romney made the comments in a discussion with Andrew Ross Sorkin of The New York Times on the DealBook DC Policy Project, in which he said he is “certain” that the former president will continue to “play a role” in the Republican Party, despite his defeat in last year’s presidential election.
“He has by far the biggest voice and a big impact on my party,” said Romney, referring to Trump. “I don’t know about his family members, if they intend to do that, but I hope he continues to play a role.”
Romney said that if Trump decides to run in 2024, he is sure that the former president will win his party’s nomination.
“I’m sure he will win the nomination,” said Romney. Although he noted that “a lot can happen between now and 2024”, the Utah Republican pointed to the polls he said show Trump as a potentially strong candidate for president in the next election cycle.
“I look at the polls and the polls show that, among the names that emerged as potential candidates in 2024, if you put President Trump there among the Republicans, he won at once,” he said.
Under pressure to campaign against Trump if he ran in 2024, Romney, who has openly criticized the former president in the past, said he would likely choose to support another candidate in the party.
“I would not vote for President Trump again. I have not voted for him in the past and would probably be supporting someone I thought most represented the small wing of the Republican party I represent, ”he said.
“There is a populist movement on the right in this country and on the left. They won’t be leaving anytime soon. Although I think that, over time, policies that endure and that really help the American family will be more successful, ”said Romney. “So I remain, if you like, a conservative more traditional than part of the populist rhetoric within my party.”
In recent weeks, Trump has shied away from doubts about whether he plans to run for president again in 2024, although he said he saw “a lot of great research out there.”
“We have tremendous support,” said Trump earlier this month. “I will not say yet [if I’m running again], but I have tremendous support and I’m looking at the numbers of searches that are increasing. … I’m the only guy who gets impeached and my number goes up. “
