WASHINGTON – Senator Mitt Romney, R-Utah, who voted in favor of convicting former President Donald Trump in his second impeachment trial, said on Tuesday that Trump would likely win the Republican Party camp if he decided to run for the presidential election. 2024.
“I don’t know if he will run in 2024 or not, but if he does, I’m sure he will win the nomination,” said Romney in an interview with the New York Times DealBook DC Policy Project.
Pressed on the forecast, Romney said: “I think he would win the nomination if he competed. I mean, a lot can happen between now and 2024. ”
“I look at the polls and the polls show that, among the names that emerged as potential candidates in 2024, if you put President Trump among the Republicans, he won with an overwhelming victory,” he added.
A recent Politico / Morning Consult poll found that 54% of Republican voters would support the trump card in a hypothetical confrontation in 2024.
Trump did not say whether he plans to run again, but did not rule out another offer. The former president promised in a farewell video that the movement he started “is just beginning”.
Romney, the party’s presidential candidate in 2012, represents the traditional wing of the increasingly divided Republican Party and often clashes with Trump. When asked if he would campaign against the former president, Romney did not respond directly, instead he said “he would not vote for President Trump again”.
“I have not voted for him in the past and would probably be supporting someone I thought most represented the small Republican Party wing that I represent,” he said.
Romney was among seven Republican senators earlier this month who joined Democrats in voting to condemn Trump for his role in the events that led to the January 6 attack on Capitol Hill. He is the only Republican senator to vote to condemn Trump in both impeachment trials.
Trump, however, was finally acquitted in a 57-43 vote, short of the 67 votes needed to convict him.
