Romney predicts that Trump would win the Republican Party nomination in 2024 if he ran for president.

Senator Mitt Romney of Utah said on Tuesday that he believes Donald J. Trump would win the Republican nomination for president if he ran for his former position in 2024, another indication of Trump’s perceived strength in the party.

“I don’t know if he will run in 2024 or not, but if he does, I’m pretty sure he’ll win the nomination,” said Romney in the DealBook DC Policy Project.

Romney noted that “a lot can happen between now and 2024”, but added, “I look at the polls, and the polls show that, among the names being presented as potential candidates in 2024, if you put President Trump there among the Republicans, he won by an overwhelming victory ”.

Romney, the Republican presidential candidate in 2012, is the only Republican senator who voted to condemn Trump in both impeachment trials.

Asked by Andrew Ross Sorkin of The New York Times whether to campaign against Trump, Romney replied: “I would not vote for President Trump again. I have not voted for him in the past. And I would probably be supporting someone I think is more representative of the small wing of the Republican Party that I represent. “

Romney’s comments were a clear sign of Trump’s enduring position in the Republican Party, even after his defeat in the elections last year and his impeachment on charges of inciting the January 6 attack on the Capitol.

“He has by far the biggest voice and a big impact on my party,” said Romney.
