Riverside County opens vaccine eligibility for over 16s on Tuesday

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (KABC) – As of Tuesday, Riverside County residents aged 16 and over will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine at four county-administered clinics.

Riverside County health officials say the move will open the vaccine’s eligibility to hundreds of thousands of residents. Those aged 16 or 17 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

“The expansion of eligibility will allow the last large group of adult residents of Riverside County to be vaccinated and will bring us one step closer to collective immunity,” said Kim Saruwatari, director of the Health System at the University of Riverside – Public Health, in a press release. “Taking the vaccine to a younger population, where we have seen an increase in cases, is a big step forward.”

Riverside County could switch to the less restrictive orange level as early as this week. The county has been in the red layer since March 16 and, in the previous five months, was in the most restrictive purple layer.
