Warning: this post contains Wednesday spoilers Riverdale debut of the season.
Yes, we are thinking that Veronica will not want to save her Riverdale prom photos.
What should have been an unforgettable night for her and Archie turned into a nightmare at the premiere of Season 5 on Wednesday, when, at her prom, Archie confessed to her that he and Betty had a final moment in the season and they kissed. (Veronica found the song he wrote for Betty and sang in the underground bar, thinking he wrote it for her. Ow.) The two lovebirds agreed to go their separate ways, and Veronica cried over her broken heart to her mother Hermione … with his father Hiram listening. (Oops, Archie, watch your back.)
Also at the premiere: Betty and Jughead followed the trail of clues in the video author’s mystery to an underground showing of illicit films – where Jughead found his sister Jellybean! – and the author attacked again with a new video of a fake murder interrupting his dance. Archie signed up for the Naval Academy, but lost an exhibition boxing match to Katy Keene’s boyfriend, KO Kelly (crossover!) And withdrew his request in disgust. And Cheryl and Toni won queens from the co-dance … but the future together looks bleak after Toni’s grandmother opposed her dating a flower.
To make sense of the whole drama, TVLine talked to Riverdale star KJ Apa about Archie’s big bomb (and why he dropped it) and what’s next in his relationship with Veronica … and Betty. (For more information from Apa on what to expect from Riverdalenext jump in time, click here.)
TVLINE | I have to ask what I asked aloud to the TV while watching the premiere: Why would Archie tell Veronica what happened to Betty? Was your conscience just eating it at that point?
I feel like if you know Archie and have been watching Riverdale for a long time … I was not surprised when I read this. Because Archie, for the most part, is a sincere person to the people he loves, and I feel like he’s not the best at living with guilt. He’s not the best at keeping things to himself, if it is hurting him or if he knows he may be hurting someone else. One of his flaws is that he speaks the truth a lot. [Laughs] Sometimes he makes mistakes and ends up spreading the beans to everyone.
TVLINE | Is there anything coming back from this for Archie and Veronica? Can they even save a friendship at this point?
I think so. I feel that the two are so strong. The reason they are moving away is because they realize they are going to live two different lives after high school. I feel that they will always have that special connection that they had. That one thing does not wipe out the rest of the story that they had.
TVLINE | We saw Hiram listening to Veronica crying about Archie, so we can assume that the position of vice mayor is no longer available. Will this put Hiram back in the war against Archie?
Certainly, yes. And we see them kind of at some point. When he learns about it, he definitely doesn’t take it lightly. Let’s just say that.
TVLINE | As the “previous” recap reminds us, Betty is the one who canceled everything with Archie, not him. So, maybe he still has some unresolved feelings?
I mean, at that point, who knows? It has always been coming and going … I feel that with Betty and Veronica, on the one hand, it is his best friend that he was the best friend of his entire life and neighbors with his entire life, and then there is this other completely new girl who came to town and he fell in love with. So it is one of those things: he will always be very close to the two, just because of the nature of the relationship he has with the two. But I really feel that a lot of his relationship with Betty, and where it goes and how they feel about each other, is something that we explored in the time jump.
