March, 27 th

Ohio reports 1,690 new cases of coronavirus. … Ohio Investigation Unit agents cite Europa Pepper Pike for disorderly activity due to improper conduct due to violations of social detachment. … Presidential spokesman for the Philippines Harry Roque announces a strict blockade in the capital and neighboring provinces after the country reports 9,838 cases – the biggest increase in a single day. … The government of Mexico releases a report showing that almost 120,000 victims of Covid may not have been counted. March 29th

Another 1,497 cases increase the state total to 1,013,119. Today’s total cases are below the 2190-day moving average of 1,590. … With the end of the winter decline in Ohio cases, there was an increase in the spring – with the newly reported cases increasing by about 10% in the last week. Vaccinations have increased dramatically, with 35% of the population aged 16 and over having received at least one vaccine. … Metro RTA will offer free round-trip transportation for vaccination appointments starting today. … About 143 million doses of vaccine have been administered in the United States, says the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, although the agency remains concerned about a further increase. … A joint WHO-China study of Covid’s origins says that the transmission of bats to humans by another animal is the most likely scenario, and that a laboratory leak of the virus is “extremely unlikely”, reports the Associated Press . … With the latest of the 2020 death reports still coming, the Ohio Department of Health reports that at least 143,558 Ohio citizens died last year from all causes in the midst of the pandemic – an increase of almost 20,000 from the previous year . … Lieutenant Governor Jon Husted (photo above, below right) duplicates the public use of the phrase “Wuhan virus”, discarding those who say the term encourages intolerance amid a scenario of growing prejudice and hate crimes against Asian Americans. Husted told a Cincinnati radio announcer that what he really meant in his 10-word tweet was to criticize the Chinese government for not being more transparent about its possible role in the pandemic. … President biden announces that 90% of adults will be eligible to receive a vaccine in the next three weeks and will have a vaccination site less than five miles from their home.

March 30th

In Ohio, 83 people died with Covid, bringing the total to 18,609. … UPI, citing a British study, says that even with widely available vaccines, people should continue to wear masks, practice social detachment and stay away from crowded enclosed spaces “to suppress the virus and prevent future blockages”. The study was published by the Journal of the Royal Society Interface. … As a precaution, authorities in some cities in Germany are suspending the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for people under the age of 60 due to new reports of unusual blood clots in people who have received the vaccines. … Canada continues to see an increase in new daily cases and hospitalizations; Officials say the variants are spreading rapidly and are a threat to younger Canadians. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau urged the nation to stay the course. … Filipino singer and businesswoman Claire de la Fuente dies of cardiac arrest three days after being diagnosed with Covid. on Tuesday, three days after the diagnosis of COVID-19. She was 62 years old.

March 31

Another 1,989 cases of coronavirus are being screened in Ohio, above the 21-day average of 1,623. … Cleveland confirms 76 new cases and no new deaths while Mayor Frank Jackson (photo above, bottom left) extends its civil emergency proclamation for the crisis until Friday, April 30.… Ohio’s case rate increases for the second consecutive week. Instead of working closer to the governor’s stated goal of 50 cases per 100,000 residents over a two-week period, cleveland.com’s Rich Exner projects that it will be close to 166.7 cases per 100,000, against 146.9 per 100,000 last week and 143.8 per 100,000 two weeks ago. … Covid is reported to be the third leading cause of death in the United States in 2020, after heart disease and cancer, based on data from the CDC. … Pfizer says that its vaccine is highly protective in children aged 12 and over, possibly marking a step towards starting vaccines for children.

April 1

The Ohio Department of Health reports 2,475 new cases, bringing the total number to 1,020,041. … Ohio reports 854 new cases across the state in K-12 and 145 students on the team the week of March 22.… Cuyahoga Community College announces that the drive-through test will be offered on Monday, April 5, at the Metropolitan Campus, 2900 Community College Ave, Cleveland; call 216-317-1250. … Although the rate of cases across the state has increased, the number of red alert counties has decreased: 51 Ohio counties remain on red alert for concern about the spread of the coronavirus. A week ago, 55 counties were on red alert in the state’s virus alert system. This compares to 66, 76, 80 and 84 counties on red alert in the previous four weeks. … The state reports that about 3.5 million Ohioans received at least their first dose, with all doses completed by about 2 million. … Governor Mike DeWine announces that the state will vaccinate all willing college students starting the week of April 5, as part of the “race” to vaccinate Ohio residents as the variants spread. … Pfizer and BioNTech say the tests suggest that their vaccine is effective against a variant that emerged in South Africa.… On the opening day of the Major League Baseball season, the Washington Nationals-New York Mets game is postponed by because of Covid’s problems with the Nationals.

April 2nd

Michigan adds 5,498 new cases and 20 deaths. MLive.com reports that the state has an average of 5,128 new cases and 22 new associated deaths per day for the past week. A week ago, the state health department recorded 3,679 cases and 22 deaths per day. The recent increase has pushed Michigan’s new case rate per 100,000 residents to the nation’s worst status.
