Riot suspect in Portland, 22, charged with assaulting police, vandalism; arrested twice in one night

A Portland riot suspect accused of punching a police officer and vandalizing the lobby of an office building was arrested twice on Thursday night.

Darby M. Howard, 22, faces charges of first-degree criminal fraud, resistance to arrest and attempted assault on a police officer, according to Oregon’s FOX 12.

Howard reportedly hit a flat-screen TV in the lobby of the Wells Fargo Center in downtown Portland and kicked an automatic glass sliding door, causing damage of more than $ 1,000.

He reportedly punched a Portland Police officer in the head while trying to arrest him after he tried to make his way through a line of police officers. He fell and was taken into custody, FOX 12 reported.

Howard, who came to Portland about two weeks ago, was released that night and arrested again a few hours later, accused of breaking a window in court using a rented Lime scooter, OregonLive.com reported. Howard told police that he has been homeless for a month, court records showed.

After his arrest on Friday morning, Howard was charged in federal prison for alleged destruction of federal property and a judge on Friday ordered him to remain in custody because of his “lack of ties to the community” and his disregard for the conditions of his release after his first arrest.

He remained in Multnomah County Prison until Friday, FOX 12 reported.

Howard was the only protester trapped in the chaos, but three others were cited for disorderly conduct, according to OregonLive.com.

Protesters set fire to and smashed windows in the United States Court area Mark O. Hatfield on Thursday night and the police responded with tear gas and smoke bombs to disperse the protesters.

Thursday’s violence in Portland was expected, with some business owners closing their deals earlier in the day, OregonLive.com reported.
