At the age of $ 20 smart cameras and $ 60 video bells, it may seem surprising to see the debut of a new doorbell camera priced at $ 250. But that’s exactly what the new Video Doorbell Pro 2 from Ring costs – and the price will yield you a number of impressive features, from 3D radar to 1536p resolution, wide-angle (and high) video. This new Ring bell is a luxury item and ambition to spare. It remains to be seen whether it fulfills its potential.
The new Video Doorbell Pro 2 follows in the footsteps of Video Doorbell Pro, which was launched in 2017 at the same high price (although it was a little more like the course at that time). This device was solid, although somewhat common. Its small design was a good step forward, however.
Unlike its predecessor, this new Doorbell Pro 2 has some genuinely interesting features. Radar, for example, will allow users to track a person’s movement approaching the door in more detail, establishing physical boundaries, such as the edge of the front yard, to determine whether an object deserves a notification or not. It will then provide an overhead view of the yard, with a dotted line showing the person’s path. It is a useful resource if, for example, you are concerned about someone investigating the home.
The video brings a less interesting but no less welcome update: the resolution is higher than any other bell and higher than most competitors. In addition, users will be able to see all the way to the door, which means that packages left by the door will no longer be out of sight. Although this is not new – the $ 150 Arlo Video Doorbell it has an aspect ratio that allows you to see the packages left by the door – it is a feature that more video bells should have.
A matrix microphone will also help to reduce sound distortion, and Doorbell Pro 2 will also benefit from the latest Ring updates – like end-to-end video encryption and Smart responses with Alexa.
Ring Video Doorbell Pro 2 will be available for pre-order starting today and will be shipped starting March 31, 2021.
