Currently, All-Decade cornerback Richard Sherman works as his own agent in contract discussions.
When he finishes his playing career, Sherman envisions a move to the other side of the negotiating table.
Sherman, who turns 33 next month, is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent in mid-March and he does not believe he will be back with the 49ers in 2021.
He said it is no one’s fault. The 49ers have 37 free agents and a figure to be pressed against the salary cap. In addition, Sherman said the club has other players ahead of him in the queue for new business.
Sherman, speaking to the NBC Sports Bay Area on behalf of Jack in the Box’s “Super-Jack’d Monday” meals, was asked how he believes General Manager John Lynch will prioritize 49ers off-season play.
“I expected Trent Williams to be the first order of business,” said Sherman. “And after that, I hope he will work to secure the cornerback’s position, because it will run out after everyone has left. And after that, you have to work at Fred Warner in this off-season. “
Williams, the team’s left tackle, plans to sign a major deal this offseason after appearing in 14 games and winning his eighth Pro Bowl career. Williams made it to the 49ers in an exchange after playing nine seasons with Washington.
Warner, an All-Pro linebacker, is eligible for a new contract for the first time. Warner could sign a new deal at around $ 15 million a season.
Sherman, Jason Verrett and K’Waun Williams are among the 49ers scheduled for free agency. Sherman said he places Verrett at the top of the team’s list of cornerbacks.
“No doubt. Without a doubt, ”said Sherman. “I think this will be the first priority after Trento, in terms of free agents.”
Verrett, 29, has played 13 games after spending most of the past four seasons off the pitch due to injuries.
“I think they have to go that way,” said Sherman. “But I also think he will have other suitors. He played according to the pattern he showed when he joined the league. When you play according to this standard, it will deserve the payday you receive. “

The 49ers signed Verrett for a one-year contract in 2019, but he was unhealthy and spent most of the season on the reserve due to injuries. They rehired him last year, and the move was worth it for both sides. The loyalty and trust that the 49ers showed that Verrett can influence his decision, said Sherman.
“If they manage to get into that draw, I’m sure he will take into account everything they did to bring him back and continue to believe him,” said Sherman. “But it is really one of those things, that he will be one of the most cornerbacks disputed in the market. So, we’ll see. “
Emmanuel Moseley is scheduled to be a restricted free agent, while reserve cornerbacks Ahkello Witherspoon and Dontae Johnson are also scheduled for an unrestricted free agency.
