Richard Branson’s mother dies of COVID-19

British billionaire and Virgin Group founder Richard Branson revealed on Monday that his 96-year-old mother, Eve, had died of coronavirus.

“I’m sorry to share that, unfortunately, like many mothers and fathers now, in Covid’s day, my mother, Eve, also passed away,” wrote Branson in a tweet.

However, instead of mourning her loss, Branson said he wanted to “celebrate his wonderful life and the joy it brought to so many.”

In doing so, Branson wrote a long note on his Virgin’s website about his mother’s life, from the days he traveled to Germany as a ballet dancer after World War II to when she performed on the West End stage.

“As for so many of us these days in Covid, it is so strange that the person who has always been by our side, with so much enthusiasm for life, is gone,” he wrote.

Even at 96, the grandmother of 11 and great-grandmother of 10, still had “the same enthusiasm and energy” that she had when Branson was a boy, said the British businessman.

Branson said his mother’s greatest legacy was the Eve Branson Foundation, which worked to “enrich the lives of people in the High Atlas Mountains”.

The non-profit organization also issued a statement after his death.

“We are very sad to share that our beloved founder, Eve Branson, passed away,” wrote the foundation. “Eve inspired and supported the communities of Atlas Mountain, until the end of her life.”

Branson also attributed his success to his mother, saying that without her help Virgin would not have existed.

He said that in the 1960s his mother found a necklace lying on the floor in England and returned it to a local police station. When no one claimed it, the police returned it. Then she sold it in London for £ 100, which she gave to her son.

“Without those £ 100, I could never have founded Virgin,” he said.
