We have our first clue as to how Sex and the City is happening without Samantha Jones.
The revival of HBO Max, officially announced last month, is bringing back the stars of the original Emmy-winning hit – minus Kim Cattrall’s Samantha. But how will the show explain the absence of one of the show’s four cores? Star Sarah Jessica Parker and writer Michael Patrick King are the creative forces behind the sequel, and “they’re not trying to remake Sex and the City”, Emphasizes Casey Bloys, content director at HBO Max, for TVLine. “They are not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s. It’s a story about women in their 50s, and they are dealing with things that people deal with in their 50s. ”
To that end, “just like in real life, people come into your life, people leave,” continues Bloys. “Friendships disappear and new friendships begin. So I think everything indicates the real stages, the real stages of life … They are trying to tell an honest story about being a woman in her 50s in New York. Therefore, everything must seem somewhat organic, and the friends you have at 30, may not have at 50 ”.
Parker will be joined by original co-stars Cynthia Nixon (Miranda) and Kristin Davis (Charlotte) when the Sex and the City revival – titled And so … – access HBO Max. And they will be supported by a more diverse team of writers, including debutants Samantha Irby, Rachna Fruchbom (Fresh off the boat) and Keli Goff (Black Lightning). Parker and King “did not want to tell a story with all-white writers or an all-white cast,” notes Bloys. “It is not a reflection of New York. So they are very, very aware of the understanding that New York must reflect the way New York looks today. ” (Reporting by Kimberly Roots)
