Retired firefighter accused of shooting extinguisher at police during Capitol riot

The retired firefighter, who appears to be the man caught on camera throwing a fire extinguisher that hit at least three police officers on Capitol Hill during a riot, was arrested on Thursday, officials said.

Robert Sanford of Chester, Pennsylvania, faces three federal criminal charges, including assaulting a police officer, the Wall Street Journal reported.

The video of the incident shows the man launching a fire extinguisher trying to control a crowd outside the west side of the Capitol.

The FBI has been processing charges against dozens of suspects in the riots, many of which have been identified through photos and videos circulating on social media – some posted by the participants themselves.

Officials told WSJ that the incident is separate from the ongoing homicide investigation by the Department of Justice and several other agencies on a Capitol police officer who died in the January 6 confusion when pro-Trump supporters breached the security of the nation’s Capitol and broke into the building, encouraged by President Trump’s encouragement to “fight” for the “stolen election”.

The deceased officer, Brian Sicknick, a 12-year veteran of the police force, was also hit in the head by a fire extinguisher and passed out after the incident. He was taken to the hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.

Four other people died during the attacks and dozens more – including several members of the police – were injured.
