Retired Cary police captain accused of DWI on New Year’s Day :: WRAL.com

– Cary’s retired police captain, Jerry Lynn McCormick, was accused of driving handicapped on New Year’s Day by Cary police.

McCormick, 56, was involved in an accident with another car at the intersection of Tryon Road and Kildaire Farm Road, officials said. No injuries were reported in the accident.

He was a police officer in North Carolina for more than 30 years and retired as a captain in the Cary Police Department in 2019, according to his online resume.

When contacted by telephone on Saturday morning, McCormick apologized for his actions.

“I’m sorry it happened,” said McCormick on Saturday morning. “It was a bad judgment on my part.”

The incident had nothing to do with the city of Cary, he said, and emphasized that he has been retired for more than a year.

According to McCormick’s business website, he now works as a consultant and speaker.

Its website says, “As a retired police captain and director of security, I work with companies, associations, non-profit organizations and universities, training and empowering employees, students, customers and employees on how to stay safe in unexpected or emergency situations.”

One of their training courses offered is how to stay safe on the road, “avoiding common distractions while driving”.
