BOSTON (WHDH) – Boston-based researchers are looking for people to enroll in a new clinical trial that will assess whether vitamin D supplements can be an effective tool in the battle against the COVID-19 pandemic.

The vitamin D study for COVID-19 will determine whether vitamin D supplements can reduce the severity of coronavirus symptoms and decrease the chances of infection, according to VIVID.

Brigham and Women’s Hospital is looking for people over 30 who have received a recent positive test result and have started symptoms in the past five days.

Study participants are expected to take vitamin D or placebo capsules every day for 28 days, provide two blood samples at home per finger prick and complete short online surveys.

“Both observational and randomized studies suggest that vitamin D may reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections in adults and children, the researchers said. “The potential role of vitamin D in protecting against infection with the new coronavirus that leads to COVID-19 is promising, but unknown.”
