Rand Paul warns that a third of Republicans will leave the party if Republican senators support the impeachment
Senator Rand Paul (R., Ky.) Warned on Friday that a third of Republican voters could leave the party if Republican Party senators voted in the impeachment process to condemn President Trump. Paul made the comments in an interview with Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle. The senator’s comments come amid a growing divide between Congressional Republicans who oppose the president’s impeachment and a smaller number that supports the move after the January 6 riots. Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell (R., Ky.) Is hopeful that Republicans can use impeachment to expunge Trump from the Republican Party, although he needs the support of at least 16 additional Republican senators to vote to condemn . “Look, I don’t agree with the [Capitol] fight that happened last week, and I voted against the overthrow of the election, but at the same time, impeachment is an erroneous, partisan notion, [and] if the Republicans agree, it will destroy the party, ”said Paul during the interview. “A third of Republicans will leave the party,” continued Paul. “It is no longer about the Electoral College, it is about the future of the party and whether you are going to condemn and excommunicate President Trump from the party. Well, guess what? Millions of your fans will also leave. ” While most Americans believe Trump should be removed from office immediately, only 17 percent of Republicans support Trump’s ouster from the presidency, according to an Axios-Ipsos poll released on Thursday. Trump support among Republicans has plummeted since the Capitol riots; however, 60% believe the party should continue to follow Trump as soon as he leaves office, an ABC News / Washington Post poll revealed.
