Report: Vikings are hiring Paul Guenther as a senior defensive assistant

USA TODAY Sports

After seven separate seasons, Mike Zimmer is meeting with one of his former technical assistants.

Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Media report that the Vikings are hiring Paul Guenther as a senior defense assistant. Guenther was most recently the defensive coordinator for the Raiders, but trained with Zimmer in Cincinnati from 2008-2013. When Zimmer became Minnesota’s head coach in 2014, Guenther took over as Bengals’ defensive coordinator.

Guenther was a defensive assistant, assistant coach of linebackers and coach of linebackers under Zimmer with Bengals.

Las Vegas sacked Guenther in December, after the Raiders earned 200 yards by running consecutive games for the Jets and Colts. Coach Jon Gruden hired Gus Bradley to replace Guenther in 2021.
