Several reports from Detroit this week indicated that Lions are interested in hiring Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert to be GM in Detroit. But apparently there was no formal contact between the teams.

The Steelers I didn’t receive an order for Lions permission to speak to Colbert, what Lions would need to do before speaking to him, according to Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

Colbert’s contract with the Steelers runs through to the 2021 draft of the NFL, so if he doesn’t sign again with them after that and Lions are willing to wait, they can sign him in four months without the Steelers’ permission. But that would leave Lions without a GM to navigate through the free agency and draft, so that scenario seems unlikely.

Most likely, Lions will hire one of several candidates they have interviewed.
