Report: Jim Harbaugh Calls Maryland Assistant to Michigan Team

Jim Harbaugh reportedly made another signing on the defensive side of the ball, hiring another promising assistant for his Michigan team.

George Helow, who spent the 2020 season as coordinator of special teams and coach for inline linebackers in Maryland, will join the Wolverines as a security coach, according to several reports.

ESPN and The Athletic are reporting the signing, which has not yet been announced by Michigan. Mike Macdonald, a 33-year-old assistant at the Baltimore Ravens, was appointed defensive coordinator on Sunday.

Helow’s curriculum includes several stops at various schools, some of which are led by some renowned coaches. He trained security guards at Colorado State in 2018 and 2019, after spending two more years on the team as an undergraduate assistant and quality control coach.

Prior to his four-year stint at Fort Collins, Helow (pronounced He-LOW) worked as a graduate assistant at the University of Georgia in 2014 and 2015 with Jeremy Pruitt while pursuing a master’s degree.

Helow was also a graduate assistant at Florida State under Jimbo Fisher in 2013, and interned at the University of Alabama in 2012. He was an advocate at the University of Mississippi from 2006 to 2010 and started his coaching career at his alma mater, Bishop Kennedy High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

It is unclear where this leaves Michigan security technician Bob Shoop, who still has another year of his original contract. Shoop spent most of the 2020 season training remotely for unexplained personal reasons, leaving his future uncertain on the team.
