There were reports last week that Bills’ offensive coordinator Brian Daboll was the favorite for the position of Chargers’ head coach, but that was before the Chargers spoke to Rams’ defensive coordinator Brandon Staley for the second time.
Staley spoke to the team for the second time on Sunday and he allegedly convinced the team that the search was over. NFL Media reports that Staley will be the next head coach of the team.
The hiring would mean a rapid rise in Staley’s hierarchy. He just ended his first season as a defensive coordinator and coached at John Carroll University in 2016. It was also there that Chargers general manager Tom Telesco went to college, although that may have nothing to do with Staley getting the job.
Staley will have high-profile defensive talents like Joey Bosa and Derwin James at his disposal if he officially moves out of alliance with Los Angeles. There is also a great offensive asset available to quarterback Justin Herbert and it looks like Staley will be accused of continuing his development for years to come.
