Report: Broncos will chase Deshaun Watson if Texans decide to switch him

USA TODAY Sports

While the Broncos continue to look for their first quarterback in the franchise since Peyton Manning, they are eyeing Deshaun Watson.

According to ABC 7’s Troy Renck in Denver, the Broncos chase Watson, if the Texans decide to change it.

The formulation of the report is intriguing. If taken literally, it means that the Broncos will not make an offer until the Texans indicate that the offers are being accepted.

Why not make an offer, without an effort from Houston, to make it clear that they will switch Watson? If Texans finally get an offer they can’t refuse, they may be smart enough not to refuse. (Or maybe not.)

The fact that the Broncos were able to send Drew Lock to Houston as part of the package does not matter. Lock set the Texans on fire in December 2019, marking a significant turnaround at NRG Stadium because of a playoff team led by Watson. Maybe some choices in the first round and Lock would close the deal.

Regardless, if the Broncos plan to wait for Texans to officially open the market before making an offer, the Broncos can wait a while. To keep Watson away from the Texans, the Broncos may have to push the issue.
