The Bears requested permission to speak with Cowboys senior defensive assistant, George Edwards, for his opening as a defensive coordinator, reports Todd Archer of ESPN.

The Cowboys want to retain Edwards, who was Minnesota’s defensive coordinator for 2014-19, but cannot block the request.

Edwards talked to Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy about the Dallas coordinator job before the team hired Dan Quinn, according to Archer.

The Bears are replacing Chuck Pagano, who retired after two years with the franchise.

They also asked to interview defensive coach Jonathan Gannon of Colts and have defensive line coach Jay Rodgers and safeties coach Sean Desai as internal candidates.
