Rep. Stefanik: The New York nursing home scandal shows corruption ‘at the highest level’

The underestimation of coronavirus deaths among asylum residents in New York is “a massive corruption scandal at the highest level” by the state government, MP Elise Stefanik, RN.Y., told Hannity on Thursday.

State Health Commissioner Howard Zucker confirmed on Thursday that at least 12,743 long-term care residents died of COVID-19 on January 19 this year, more than 4,200 more than the official count given in that day.

State Attorney General Letitia James accused in a report released hours before that the death toll at the nursing home could drop by about 50%. Zucker’s number included for the first time 3,829 confirmed deaths from COVID-19 among nursing home residents who were transported to hospitals.

REP. ELISE STEFANIK, RN.Y.: We know that the March decree that the governor instituted … forced nursing homes to accept patients with positive COVID, which put our most vulnerable constituents in New York at risk.

There have been advocates who have lost loved ones, who have asked for answers, accountability and transparency. And at each step, the governor and his team leaders contaminated these individuals. One of the most notable and effective advocates is [FOX News senior meteorologist] Janice Dean, and they despised her every day, even calling these defenders of the family part of a death cult.

Finally, today is the first step towards justice. We need to get responses and issue subpoenas immediately against the governor, New York State health commissioner Dr. Zucker, and his senior team, because corruption is cover-up. They knew that number, but they refused to be transparent with New Yorkers. But what was most cruel is [not] be more transparent with those who have lost loved ones.

The way to get answers is to issue subpoenas. Both Democrats and Republicans in the state Senate and Assembly are finally meeting to issue subpoenas. We also need to continue independent investigation at the federal level … These families deserve responsibility and we need to ensure that this never happens again.
