US Representative Nancy Mace will join the Chamber’s Transportation Commission as a freshman legislator, fulfilling one of her first objectives in Congress.
“One of the promises I made to the people of Lowcountry when I ran for Congress was that I would work to restart our economy and rebuild the United States,” Mace, R-Charleston, told the Post and Courier.
“This starts with repairing our country’s aging roads and infrastructure, which are in desperate need of repairs in Lowcountry,” she said.
Mace defeated current Democrat Joe Cunningham in a narrow victory in November, becoming the first Republican woman to represent Palmetto State in the House of Representatives in South Carolina history.
Shortly after her victory, she told the Post and Courier that she wanted to join the transportation committee. Mace said he hopes his role will improve road quality and boost Charleston’s shipping economy.
“Anyone who has made a trip from Charleston to Beaufort knows that our roads are a disaster,” she said. “The airports, ports and railways in our region are not in a better condition.”
Former US deputy Mark Sanford, R-Charleston, also from the 1st District, served on the same committee.
